The Bitcoin Letters: TCP/IP, IPV6 and the Metanet

Bryan Daugherty, the Public Policy Director at Bitcoin Association has published his new book The Bitcoin Letters. The book aims to help readers unlock the mysteries surrounding Bitcoin and essential concepts such as sustainability, regulation, and the transformation to Web2 and Web3.

Bitcoin has taken the world by storm, but there are still many misconceptions about the technology. Through thoughtful analysis and engaging writing, readers will gain a deeper understanding of the intricacies of Bitcoin and how it is shaping the future of finance.

Additionally, the book includes three letters written to industry leaders – Elon Musk, NYS Governor Hochul, and SEC Chair Gary Gensler – that provide unique insight into the world of Bitcoin.

TCP/IP, IPV6 and the Metanet

A key section of the book is the relationship between the TCP/IP protocol, IPv6, the Metanet, and Bitcoin. Daugherty discusses how these different technologies intersect and relate to each other and how Bitcoin will ultimately form the bedrock of the Internet going forward.

TCP/IP is a set of communication protocols that enable network devices to communicate and transmit data over the Internet. In the TCP/IP model, each layer is independent and relies on a handshake to pass data from one layer to the next. By comparison, the BSV ledger serves as a secure, distributed database and ruleset for both the transport and network layers to work together.

IPv6 is the latest version of the Internet Protocol, which is the primary protocol used for transmitting data over the Internet. To ensure Internet security and reliability, combining IPv6 addresses with the public key to the blockchain for identity mapping purposes is essential, Daugherty says. Network operators can also use the blockchain to manage IP addresses, achieving spontaneous management and organisation of network access devices. This approach would break the monopoly of network operators on IP addresses and allows for a decentralised IPv6 distribution mechanism.

Finally, Daugherty explains how the Metanet is a vision for a decentralised Internet built on top of the BSV blockchain that provides a platform for the creation and management of valuable digital assets. This has the potential to enable new business models based on on-chain-based content distribution and microtransactions.
