Breaking silos through standardisation

Ásgeir Óskarsson (Business Analyst at BSV Blockchain) recently spoke with CoinGeek at the AWS Summit on the topic of standardisation Standardisation is of central interest in the blockchain space, especially to simplify the onboarding of new developers, but also to ensure interoperability between different applications and services.

In a discussion with CoinGeek reporter Becky Ligero, Oskarsson briefly summarised efforts to standardise, and hinted at the development of an ERC-20-like standard for the BSV blockchain.

Blockchain developers often work in silos, missing opportunities for collaboration. The BSV Blockchain is committed to changing this by connecting developers, sparking dialogue, and fostering collective problem-solving. Oskarsson emphasised the practical aspect of creating real-life events where developers can engage in workshops, meetups, and collaborative projects.

In addition to practical events, the topic of standardisation is one that occupies the BSV Blockchain on many other levels and in cooperation with many other organisations and institutions. Oskarsson suggests that a distinction can be made between internal and external standards.

Developing internal standards for the BSV blockchain

A prime example of internal standardisation is Ethereum’s ERC-20 token standard that Oskarsson pointed out. This standard allowed developers from all over the world to easily launch token projects without much hassle. Apart from the final outcome of the ICO craze, ERC-20 is still a good example of how good internal standards can facilitate adoption.

Oskarsson hinted that a similar standard will be developed for the BSV Blockchain:

‘Ethereum has their ERC 20 for their tokens. We want to make sure we have that equivalent and more on BSV.’

However, the work of the BSV Blockchain also involves engagement with external standardisation bodies.

External standardisation for the Internet the web

Work on external standards is another focus for BSV Blockchain, as it is key to the adoption of the blockchain outside of the BSV community. Oskarsson pointed out that BSV Blockchain is therefore aligning with standards set by IEEE and IETF to boost adoption in real-world applications that are not necessarily developed or used by blockchain-savvy businesses and institutions and their clients.

However, standardisation efforts are also taking place at other levels. The BSV Technical Standards Committee is heavily involved in the standardisation of BSV as a kind of forum with links to the industry. There are also approaches from the developer community itself, such as the BRC Repo, which is operated by Ty Everett and the Project Babbage team. Another effort from this direction and the BSV Blockchain team is the W3C Blockchain group, which is concerned with the standardisation of blockchain applications in the context of the web as opposed to the Internet (IEEE and IETF).
